Beverly Hills -- Politically distinct from the rest of Los Angeles, Beverly Hills is a famous enclave best known for its palm-tree-lined streets of palatial homes, famous residents (Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty and Annette Bening), and high-priced shops. But it's not all glitz and glamour; the healthy mix of filthy rich, wannabes, and tourists that comprises downtown Beverly Hills creates a unique -- and often snobby-surreal -- atmosphere. Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo beaches -- These are laid-back, mainly residential neighborhoods with modest homes (except for oceanfront real estate), mild weather, and residents happy to have fled the L.A. There are excellent beaches for volleyball, surfing, and tanning here, but when it comes to cultural activities, pickings can be slim. The restaurant scene, while limited, has been improving steadily, and some great new bars and clubs have opened near their respective piers. Marina del Rey -- Just south of Venice, Marina del Rey is a somewhat quieter, more upscale waterside community best known for its man-made small-craft harbor, the largest of its kind in the world.

In March 1643 Wyatt’s successor, Governor Sir William Berkeley, authorized the burgesses to sit apart from the Council members as a separate chamber in a bicameral assembly. At this time the House of Burgesses gave itself parliamentary privileges to protect its integrity and its members. By the middle of the seventeenth century the General Assembly had developed into a colonial counterpart of Parliament. The House of Burgesses met in a large yet relatively simple chamber on the first floor in the east wing of the Capitol. Among those who served as burgesses, were Patrick Henry, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Peyton Randolph, and George Wythe. The Capitol was not only the place where these men strode toward independence but also very much a training ground for those who would create a new, democratically elected representative government.

In one memorable case in 1718, the court sentenced a group of Blackbeard’s pirates to hang.7 Unfortunately, most of the records from the Virginia General Court were destroyed in (you guessed it) a fire during the Civil War. On Halloween 1698, the Virginia statehouse in Jamestown, the previous capital city, went up in flames. It was the fourth time that fire had evicted Jamestown’s legislators.1 They decided to move the capital city to Williamsburg and set about constructing a Capitol building. The creation of the House of Burgesses, along with other progressive measures, made Sir George Yeardley exceptionally popular among the colonists, and he served two terms as Virginia governor. During his tenure, Washington was not an outspoken burgess, nor did he introduce expansive or innovative legislation.
The Revolutionary War
The resolutions were passed by the House of Burgesses and published throughout the American Colonies. At the first meeting of the House of Burgesses, 22 men, representing 11 settlements, assembled in Jamestown with Governor Yeardley and his Governor’s Council. Together, they approved legislation related to tobacco prices, servant contracts, and other issues of concern to the colonists. The first meeting lasted for six days and the weather was so hot and humid that two men became ill and one died. The Virginia House of Burgesses became the first general assembly of the commonwealth when the United States declared its independence from England in 1776.

While the education system is superb and the community is welcoming, living in Malibu does come with a relatively hefty price tag. Suburb is home to many of the county’s most expensive neighborhoods including Malibu Colony, Serra Retreat, and La Costa. However, if you branch out further into the hills, you’ll find more ranches, stables, and fields rather than extravagant mansions. While most people believe that Malibu is limited to the rich coastal city itself, the region entails much more. You’ll find residential complexes and recreational venues densely located along this Los Angeles suburb’s coastline. Within the subdivisions, there are hundreds of suburbs and neighborhoods with unique properties.

I know it doesn’t look like the set but getting to go inside such an iconic house is a rare chance. Brandon and Brenda Walsh did not actually live in the zip code or Beverly Hills. Though no real governing has happened at Williamsburg’s Capitol since 1779, its reconstruction in the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area continues to inspire and educate visitors every day. Between 1931 and 1934, Colonial Williamsburg rebuilt the old Capitol based on the design of the first Capitol that stood from 1705 to 1745 (because it was more well documented). The next day, the General Assembly of Virginia convened for a commemorative session at the site. For obvious reasons, they worried that the new building would burn down. Candles and other flames were widely used in the building.4 Like its predecessor, it burned to the ground in 1747. Despite the loss, Washington decided to run again for the House of Burgesses.

It was created by Governor George Yeardley (c. 1587–1627) under instructions from the Virginia Company of London, which owned the colony of Virginia. In hope of attracting more immigrants to its colony, the company replaced a form of martial law used by the colony's previous governor with English common law. Each county sent two representatives and elections were held when the governor called them, not at regular intervals. Votes were cast viva voce, or by voice, the voters standing in front of the crowd to say the name of their chosen candidates out loud to be recorded by the sheriff. Sometimes raucous events, election days often found voters plied with alcoholic beverages and food by candidates. Washington, in fact, paid for food and drinks to be provided for voters during at least some of his winning elections.
On November 18, 1618, King James I released the ‘Great Charter of 1618’. The Great Charter suspended the military government and replaced it with a monarch-approved governor and advisory council and authorized the governor to summon a General Assembly to create laws. The House of Burgesses was a superior school for statesmen, not only for those serving Virginia, but also for those serving the new United States. Peyton Randolph, the House of Burgesses’s last speaker, was the first president of the Continental Congress, and many of the Virginia representatives to Congress had experience as burgesses. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Richard Henry Lee, Patrick Henry, and other great revolutionary leaders of Virginia served first in the House of Burgesses, where they learned the skills that enabled them to lead in founding the new nation.
